Meliquina Shelter

Built for Solitude and Landscape

Refugio Meliquina is a compact, off-grid residence designed by architect Luis Abba and set on the edge of the Patagonian steppe near Lago Meliquina. The structure combines dark corrugated steel and warm cedar cladding in a single-level volume that reads as both industrial and quietly natural against the surrounding scrub and pine. Floor-to-ceiling glazing on every principal room opens the interior entirely to the mountain panorama.

Inside, the plan is direct and unhurried: an open kitchen and dining area anchored by a freestanding wood-burning stove, two bedrooms with individual mountain views, and a material palette of poured concrete, untreated wood, and white plaster. Solar panels on the roof ensure complete energy independence. The property is a rare opportunity — finished architecture in a protected natural corridor, with no comparable neighbors in sight.
